1972 Reservation Policy in Meghalaya: Committee Recommendations and Review Push

1972 Reservation Policy in Meghalaya: Committee Recommendations and Review Push.webp

The Meghalaya Government presented the State Reservation Policy in the Assembly on Wednesday, prompting a strong reaction from the VPP. Party President and Nongkrem MLA, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, stated that the party would thoroughly examine the policy and pressure the government to immediately review it, otherwise they will resort to agitation. The Committee emphasized that reservations should not solely be based on population share but on constitutional principles such as social and educational backwardness, historical disadvantage, and adequate representation in public services, in line with judicial precedents. It is worth noting that the VPP had previously organized protests in Shillong in 2023, demanding an immediate review of the 1972 job reservation policy. An Expert Committee, headed by Justice Mool Chand Garg, was constituted in September 2023 and submitted its report in June 2025, but the document has not yet been made public, raising concerns about transparency.
