March 30, New Delhi – Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, held a press conference on Monday regarding the upcoming 2027 Census.

The 16th nationwide Census of India is scheduled to be conducted in two phases, starting in late 2026 and concluding in 2027. This time, data will be collected digitally. Under Section 15 of the Census Act, individual data will remain confidential.

Mritunjay Kumar Narayan stated that the census in India is conducted in two phases. The first phase is house listing and housing census, in which information about households is collected. The second phase, known as population enumeration, gathers detailed demographic, social, economic, cultural, migration and reproduction-related data from every individual, from newborns to people of all age groups, through a set of defined questions.

He further added that a new system of self-enumeration has been introduced for the upcoming census. Individuals can now digitally submit their details before the house-to-house survey begins.
