Gondia, March 26 In what appears to be a case of food poisoning, at least 45 students from a government-run nursing college in Gondia, Maharashtra, were hospitalised after falling ill after eating dinner at the college's mess, officials said on Thursday.
All the students are in stable condition, and most are expected to be discharged soon, they added.
The students are enrolled in the Government Nursing College, located within the campus of the KTS District Government Hospital and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Gondia.
Approximately 185 students reside in the college's hostels.
On Wednesday, after having dinner at the mess inside the college, around 45 students began to complain of stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea. They were admitted to the GMCH on Thursday morning, where a team of expert doctors is monitoring their condition, officials said.
GMCH Dean Dr Kusumakar Ghorpade said that some of the students were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) due to their initial condition.
"However, there is no need to worry as all the students are fine, and most of them are likely to be discharged by tonight," he said.
District Civil Surgeon Dr Purushottam Patle said that the students had consumed 'khichdi' and 'kadhi' at the mess, which caused some of them to experience health problems like vomiting.
"We have collected samples of the food and water from the mess and sent them to the Food and Drug Administration's laboratory for testing. The exact cause will be known once the report comes," he said.
