April 05, Hyderabad: In a significant move to make cooking gas more accessible, major oil marketing companies have introduced compact 5 kg LPG cylinders, targeting migrant workers, students, and employees living in rented accommodations.
Indian Oil Corporation has launched its 5 kg cylinder under the brand name “Chhotu,” now available at petrol pumps, grocery stores, supermarkets, and Indane distributors. Bharat Gas has introduced the “Mini” 5 kg cylinder, which can be delivered directly to customers’ doorsteps through a simple phone call. HP Gas has rolled out its 5 kg cylinder named “Appu,” available at petrol bunks, retail outlets, and kirana stores.
Until now, consumers largely relied on standard 14.2 kg domestic cylinders and 19 kg commercial cylinders. The introduction of smaller cylinders addresses recent supply challenges and aims to benefit those who face difficulty in obtaining regular LPG connections.
A key advantage of these mini cylinders is that customers are not required to submit address proof. A valid government-issued identity card is sufficient, allowing instant purchase from nearby outlets without lengthy paperwork or waiting periods.
Unlike conventional cylinders that require advance booking and home delivery, these 5 kg cylinders can be refilled easily at gas agencies or nearby stores. Oil companies, along with dealers and distributors, are also conducting awareness campaigns to inform the public about the availability and benefits of these cylinders.
