'Accused': Director Shares Approach to a Sensitive Story.webp

Mumbai, February 27 – Director Anubhuti Kashyap, who is receiving a lot of positive response to her recently released streaming movie 'Accused', has shared the key considerations she had in mind when telling the story.

Anubhuti, who is also the sister of Anurag Kashyap, spoke with IANS during the film's promotion, and said that the most important thing for her as a storyteller was to avoid sensationalizing the narrative. "Accused" follows the story of a woman who is alleged to have sexually harassed a victim. The film stars Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta in the lead roles.

She told IANS, "The story and the subject required a specific perspective, a certain empathetic approach. We felt that it couldn't be sensationalized. And we didn't see it that way either. So we consciously made that choice, and we maintained that approach while writing the script. We wanted to tell the incidents and events in the story that made people uncomfortable, but not the queer relationship, but other things that were happening in the core of the story. That was one of the guidelines."

She further added, "We weren't afraid to write about plot points, scenes, or even characters that might make you slightly uncomfortable. We maintained that perspective, we maintained that ambiguity. We didn't resolve everything in the film. These were the approaches we took. We consciously considered these while writing the script, because we felt that it was all derived from the subject matter, and it demanded that kind of storytelling."

"Accused" is available to stream on Netflix.
