
The government has reported over 32,500 cases of drug abuse registered across Jammu and Kashmir since 2022, with the highest numbers recorded in the Srinagar and Jammu districts.
According to official figures shared by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, 16,759 cases were reported from the Kashmir division, while 15,758 cases were registered in the Jammu division. Within Kashmir, the Srinagar district accounted for the highest number at 6,100 cases. Overall, the Government Medical College Jammu recorded the highest number at 9,806 cases.
In response to the growing challenge, de-addiction services are being strengthened across the Union Territory under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Campaign for a Drug-Free India). Functional Addiction Treatment Facilities (ATFs) have been established in all districts to provide structured treatment and counselling services.
De-addiction Outpatient Department (OPD) services are operational in all 20 districts, while Inpatient Department (IPD) facilities are available in nine Government Medical Colleges (GMCs).
Notably, the Addiction Treatment Facility in Samba, established in February 2024, is sponsored by the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS New Delhi.
The government reiterated its commitment to intensifying awareness, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts to combat drug abuse in the region.
