Addressing Panic Buying: Telangana Steps Up Vigil Against LPG Black Marketing.webp

Hyderabad, March 13 Assuring that there is no shortage of LPG supply for domestic consumers, the Telangana government on Friday said the state currently maintains about 10,611 tonnes of the cooking fuel in stock—equivalent to about 6.97 lakh cylinders.

Telangana boasts a robust LPG network, with around 12.9 million active domestic connections serviced by 810 distributors. The daily requirement stands at approximately 2.5 lakh cylinders, of which domestic users account for nearly 86 per cent, leaving commercial demand at about 14 per cent, an official release said.

Telangana Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy held a review meeting on the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply situation with the Chief Secretary, district Collectors, senior officials from the Civil Supplies Department, Superintendents of Police, Police Commissioners, and representatives from Oil Companies (OMCs).

No bottling plant in the state has faced disruptions, and over 90 per cent of domestic demand has been consistently met in recent periods, an official release said.

"The minister firmly assured the participants and the public that there is no shortage of domestic LPG in Telangana. He urged people to avoid panic booking based on unverified social media rumors, stressing that the supply chain remains stable and fresh consignments arrive regularly. Officials reported that the state maintains about 10,611 metric tonne of LPG in stock, equivalent to roughly 6.97 lakh cylinders," the release said.

He assured that LPG would be supplied adequately to domestic consumers and directed district officials to take steps against black marketing.

He also promised that LPG would be supplied adequately to hospitals and government hospitals.

A key measure discussed was enforcing revised booking intervals to prevent the diversion of subsidized domestic cylinders to commercial or hoarding purposes. The government has aligned with national guidelines to set the minimum booking gap at 25 days for urban consumers and 45 days for rural consumers.

Dedicated coordination committees were established on Friday at both state and district levels. The State-Level LPG Supply Coordination Committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, will monitor real-time stock, distribution, and compliance across Telangana.

At the district level, committees led by Collectors will conduct daily reviews, enforce booking rules, and address local grievances promptly. These bodies include representatives from Civil Supplies, police, and OMCs to ensure seamless collaboration.

The government has mandated zero shortages for essential services such as hospitals, schools, orphanages, old age homes, and other critical institutions. Minor adjustments may apply to commercial sectors only if needed to safeguard domestic priorities, but officials clarified that overall supply stability allows balanced distribution.

The administration highlighted the OTP-based delivery verification system, where suppliers generate an OTP sent to the booked customer's registered mobile number. Delivery personnel hand over the cylinder only after the customer provides the OTP, reducing the chances of cylinders reaching unauthorized recipients.

Authorities have registered numerous cases under the Essential Commodities Act for hoarding, diversion, and black marketing. District Collectors and police were directed to maintain vigilant patrolling, conduct surprise inspections at dealerships, and take swift legal action against violators, including potential license cancellations, the release added.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao instructed officials to take up a daily review of LPG supply and vigilance by police at gas agencies to prevent black marketing.

He said currently there are 1.29 crore domestic connections and that adequate stocks are available as per demand.

He said oil marketing companies should take measures to ensure prompt supply to the consumers.

State Civil Supplies Commissioner Stephen Ravindra, representatives of HPCL, IOCL, BPCL and other officials attended the meeting.

Though the state has announced that there is no shortage, there has been massive panic in buying LPG.

According to Telangana LPG Distributors Association president Kalluri Jagan Mohan Reddy, the sudden spike in orders has paralysed the distribution network, disrupting operations at many LPG distribution centres in the state.

He said the unexpected rush of consumers to book cylinders has strained the system, triggering both technical and operational difficulties at multiple locations.
