February 19, New Delhi: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India's leadership in hosting the first AI Summit in the Global South.
Speaking at the summit, Guterres said that artificial intelligence must benefit everyone, accelerate breakthroughs, and expand learning opportunities. He emphasized that, if implemented correctly, AI can advance the Sustainable Development Goals, speed up medical discoveries, strengthen food security, bolster climate action and disaster preparedness, and improve access to vital public services.
However, he warned that AI can also deepen inequality, amplify bias, and cause harm. As AI's energy and water demands rise, Guterres stressed that data centers and supply chains must transition to clean power and avoid shifting costs onto vulnerable communities.
