New Delhi, March 16 An Air India A350 aircraft, carrying approximately 300 people from New York to Delhi, was diverted to Shannon on Monday due to a technical issue, and the plane is currently grounded in the Irish town for extensive technical checks.
According to sources, the plane, which had been airborne for nearly six hours before being diverted to Shannon, carried around 300 passengers.
"Flight AI102, operating from New York (JFK) to Delhi on March 15, made a precautionary diversion to Shannon, Ireland, following a suspected technical issue. In line with Air India's high safety standards, the aircraft is currently undergoing extensive technical evaluations, which will require additional time to complete," the airline said in a statement in the evening.
Air India also stated that its airport partners have been working closely with Shannon airport authorities to provide full support to passengers and crew.
"Meals and refreshments were provided, and assistance was arranged to help passengers complete immigration and customs procedures. Hotel accommodation has also been offered to all affected guests," the airline said.
Expressing regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers, Air India stated that it was making every effort to ensure that passengers could continue their journey to Delhi as soon as possible.
Earlier in the day, the airline stated that the aircraft landed safely at Shannon Airport at 0430 local time, and that all passengers and crew were safe.
Information available on flight tracking website Flightradar24.com showed that the plane had been airborne for nearly six hours before being diverted.
