Aizawl, April 8 Mizoram's ruling party, the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), promised "clean governance" in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation ahead of the upcoming civic elections on April 21.
Addressing a series of street rallies in the state capital, ZPM leaders accused the previous Mizo National Front (MNF) administration of turning the municipal body into a "contract distribution centre" for political favourites.
Revenue Minister B. Lalchhanzova said, "The previous administration reduced the AMC to a level where they merely handed out contracts to their favourites. Financial management will be conducted with total transparency if the ZPM comes to power."
He added that a ZPM-led corporation would prioritise ward committees to implement development works legally and ensure transparent utilisation of AMC funds.
Forest Minister Lalthansanga echoed the commitment to fiscal integrity, claiming a shift in public sentiment regarding taxation due to the honest use of state funds.
"Under the ZPM administration, the public is pleased because taxes are being utilised honestly," he said, noting that timely payment of power bills had secured over Rs 700 crore in rebates.
The ZPM, MNF, and Congress have fielded 19 candidates each, while the BJP nominated 11 candidates. Counting of votes will be held on April 27.
