New Delhi, April 10 Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma, who was facing scrutiny after large quantities of burnt currency notes were recovered from his residence here last year, has submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, rendering the impeachment proceedings against him futile.

The following is the timeline of events in the matter:

* March 14, 2025: A fire broke out at around 11:35 pm at the judge's official bungalow in Tughlak Crescent in the national capital, leading to the discovery of large quantities of burnt cash during firefighting.

* March 15: Officials from the Delhi High Court inspect the site of the incident on the instructions of the high court chief justice.

* March 17: Delhi HC Chief Justice D K Upadhyay meets then Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

* March 20: The Delhi HC Chief Justice shares photos and videos with the Chief Justice.

* March 20: The English daily TOI reports on the alleged discovery of partially burnt cash at Justice Varma's residence.

The Delhi HC Chief Justice writes to the Chief Justice, favouring a deeper investigation.

* March 21: The Chief Justice requests a written response from Justice Varma by noon on March 22. The Supreme Court collegium considers transferring Justice Varma to the Allahabad HC.
