Palnadu (Andhra Pradesh), April 4 A 32-year-old woman working as outsourced staff in a government department was allegedly raped and assaulted by an unidentified person in Macherla, a police official said on Saturday.

Palnadu district Superintendent of Police (SP) B Krishna Rao said the woman was living alone in her house. The unidentified person knocked on the door at 4 pm on April 2, pretending to ask for a glass of drinking water. He then forcibly entered the house and raped her.

According to police, the woman had been living alone in Macherla after separating from her husband, while her daughter stayed with her grandparents.

The SP said a rape case has been registered and investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed police to immediately arrest the perpetrator who raped the woman working in the Panchayat Raj Department, an official release said.

Officials informed the CM that the woman had been taken to Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH) for medical tests.

The CM was informed that teams led by an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) are searching for the rapist, and that they have already detained a few suspects.

Naidu called for strict punishment to send a message that crimes against women would not be tolerated, the release said.
