The Jambu Zoo has received a pair of hippopotamuses from the Arignar Anna Zoological Park as part of an animal exchange program approved by the Central Zoo Authority.
Officials stated that the semi-aquatic mammals arrived in Jammu on March 13 after being transported by train from Chennai. The animals were brought in exchange for a pair of Himalayan black bears as part of efforts to diversify wildlife exhibits and enhance visitor engagement at the zoo.
Authorities said special arrangements were made during the long journey to maintain the animals' body temperature. Custom-made water sprinklers were installed in the transport enclosure to keep them cool and comfortable.
The hippopotamuses will remain under a mandatory 15-day quarantine period before being introduced for public display in accordance with standard zoo management and animal health protocols.
Officials noted that the introduction of hippopotamuses to the zoo was conceptualised by Sarvesh Rai, who previously served as Chief Wildlife Warden.
A team comprising Range Officer Noor-ul-Amin, Forest Protection Force official Sudesh Kotwal, animal keepers Anwar and Mukhtiar, and veterinarian Ranjit Katoch supervised the transportation and handling of the animals.
Chief Wildlife Warden Chaturbhuja Behera said the new addition is expected to become a major attraction for visitors. He added that more species are likely to be introduced in the coming months as authorities continue efforts to expand wildlife exhibits and improve visitor facilities at the zoo.
