Madrid, April 9 – Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has defended his players and emphasized the importance of consistency ahead of their La Liga clash against Girona on Friday. Real Madrid enter the match after consecutive 2-1 defeats against Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Mallorca in the league, leaving them seven points behind Barcelona with eight matches remaining.
Asked about the impact of another loss on their title chances, Arbeloa said, “The players know that every game is vital, and there is less room for error.”
Despite an important European fixture next week, the coach insisted his side is fully focused on the immediate challenge. “The players are the first who want to play, because they know that the result on Tuesday wasn't what we expected. I have spoken to most of them, and they want to play and offer a win to the fans,” he said, as quoted by Xinhua.
Arbeloa also dismissed suggestions that his squad lacked commitment. “It is vital in life to have a good attitude and commitment. The players are the best in the world, but talent alone isn't enough if we want to be consistent,” he added.
The coach voiced strong support for midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who has come under scrutiny after recent performances. “He has played a lot under me, and he will start tomorrow. He is an important player for the club, and he has shown the quality he has. He has the confidence of everyone at the club, including the coach,” Arbeloa said.
Arbeloa confirmed changes to the lineup, with Jude Bellingham and Eder Militao set to return. However, Ferland Mendy remains sidelined due to a muscle injury.
Meanwhile, Girona arrive after a win over Villarreal but will miss top scorer Vladislav Vanat, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury. With the title race entering a crucial phase, Real Madrid will be aiming to bounce back and keep their hopes alive.
