Rampur (Himachal Pradesh), March 11 A mountaineer achieved a rare feat by scaling the 17,000-foot Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash peak in March, when weather conditions are considered unfavorable for trekking.

Bal Krishan Thakur (38), from Nirmand in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, said he began his trek on March 8 to reach the summit of what is one of the five separate peaks collectively known as the Panch Kailash.

The trekking route to Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash, considered one of the most challenging treks in the country, is usually open for 15-25 days in July-August and is closed for the rest of the year.

In March, the weather is very unpredictable and stormy, with blizzards and landslides on the treacherous route for the pilgrimage. Melting snow near Bhim Dwari makes the route even more dangerous.

The Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash pilgrimage is often suspended even during the summer due to inclement weather conditions.

Bal Kishan urged young people to pursue adventure sports not only as a hobby but also as a means of employment. He said that this field holds immense potential for youth and can even help them avoid drug addiction.

Locals expressed pride over Bal Krishan's feat and said there are a large number of talented youth in the area who could bring glory if the government promoted mountaineering, other adventure sports, and provided facilities.
