Ashok Sharma: Discipline Key to Preventing Fast Bowling Injuries.webp

New Delhi, April 10 Bowling at speeds of up to 150 kmph carries inherent risks, but the latest IPL sensation, Ashok Sharma, firmly believes that a structured lifestyle, including getting enough sleep, can significantly help in preventing injuries.

The Gujarat Giants bowler bowled a blistering delivery of 154.2 kmph against the Rajasthan Royals in his second IPL game, attracting the attention of the cricketing community.

The 23-year-old was bought by GT for Rs 90 lakh after a successful season for Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also made his List A and first-class debut last season.

Before him, players like Mayank Yadav and Umran Malik had also achieved similar success, only to be sidelined due to recurring injuries.

The extra pace is his biggest strength, and the fast bowler from Rajasthan is fully aware of the injury risks and his own ways to manage them.

"If you are a fast bowler, injuries will happen. You can only avoid them by getting enough sleep, focusing on your recovery, and maintaining a healthy diet. I follow a strict routine, I don't skip anything. My daily routine is something I strictly adhere to," he said.

"There is no compromise on gym or pool sessions," said Ashok, who is not obsessed with breaking the 157 kmph record in the IPL.

Ashok comes from a farming family and trains at the Aravalli Cricket Academy in Jaipur, where overnight Lucknow Super Giants star Mukul Choudhary also practices.

Ashok's brother had to give up his cricketing dreams as the family could only support one of them at that time.

Like any aspiring cricketer, Ashok aspires to play for India.

He gives equal importance to all formats, and in the GT camp, he discusses fast bowling with head coach Ashish Nehra, Ishant Sharma, and Mohammed Siraj.

So, what are his go-to deliveries?

"I prefer slower balls and yorkers the most," he said.

"I enjoy playing in all formats. The four-day game is very important. I played nine games last year (in the age group). This year I played four Ranji games. I want to play in all formats," said the soft-spoken Ashok.

When asked about the biggest difference between IPL and domestic cricket, Ashok said, "...the margin for error is much smaller in the IPL. You can't make mistakes in the IPL, while in domestic cricket, you might get away with bowling a bad ball."

Ashok is grateful that cricket has allowed him to provide a decent life for his family.

"Life has changed a lot (after the IPL). From where I was to where I am, I have learned so much. My dream is to play for India.

"For my family members, I remain the same. As far as relatives are concerned, they are always there for you, whether you are doing well or struggling," he said with a laugh.
