Ashwini Deshmukh Contests Sarpanch Election After Husband's Murder.webp

Beed (Maharashtra), April 9 Ashwini Deshmukh, the wife of the late Santosh Deshmukh, filed her nomination on Thursday for the by-election to the post of Massajog sarpanch, which became vacant after her husband's brutal murder in December 2024.

However, the election would not be unopposed, as Swaroopanand Deshmukh, another candidate for the post, said he would also file his nomination.

Santosh Deshmukh, then sarpanch of the village in Kaij tehsil, was brutally murdered on December 9, 2024, for opposing an attempt to extort money from a wind power company. Walmik Karad, a close aide of then Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde, was among those arrested following the murder.

Speaking after filing her nomination, Ashwini Deshmukh expressed her determination to fulfill her late husband's unfinished vision and address the village's long-standing issue of providing drinking water.

The gram panchayat has 2,284 registered voters. Voting will take place on April 29.
