Assam Assembly Elections: Congress Faces Nomination Issues

Assam Assembly Elections: Congress Faces Nomination Issues.webp

Guwahati, March 24 The nomination of one Congress candidate from the Haflong constituency for the Assam assembly polls was rejected during scrutiny on Tuesday, according to the Election Commission.

Besides, one set of nomination papers of Congress nominees Bidisha Neog for Jalukbari, the constituency of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Ananda Narah for Dhakuakhana were cancelled, the EC website said. However, one set of each of the candidates was accepted, ensuring they remain in the fray.

Nominations of several other candidates have also been scrapped, with the final figures to be declared at the end of the scrutiny process later on Tuesday.

The reasons for the rejections have not been cited on the ECI website.

The papers of Congress leader Nirmal Langthasa were rejected for the Halfong constituency. However, the nomination for the Congress nominee from the same seat, Nandita Garlosa, was accepted.

Garlosa, an Assam minister, joined the Congress on Sunday after being denied a BJP ticket, and filed her nomination papers the very next day. The Congress had earlier fielded its state unit general secretary Nirmal Langthasa from the seat, but he has agreed to give the party ticket to Garlosa in "greater public interest".

A total of 1389 nomination papers were submitted by over 815 candidates for the 126-member state Assembly, with several nominees filing more than one set of papers.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 26. Elections will be held on April 9, while votes will be counted on May 4.
