New Delhi, March 13 The Congress' Central Election Committee (CEC) met here on Friday and approved the second list of candidates for the Assam Assembly elections, which is expected to be released soon.

The CEC meeting, chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, was attended by former party chief Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress' in-charge for Assam Jitendra Singh, Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, among other leaders.

Following the meeting, Gogoi told reporters that the list finalized during the meeting is likely to be released on Saturday.

"We will also endeavor to publish tomorrow the list of seats that have been allotted to our alliance partners. A residual 5-7 per cent of seats will remain; given the prevailing political situation, we may discuss these at a later stage," he said.

The Congress, on March 3, had released its first list of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly polls, fielding Gogoi from the Jorhat seat.

Taking the lead in announcing the names of its candidates even before the declaration of the polls, the opposition party had fielded Congress Legislature Party leader in Assam, Debabrata Saikia, from the Nazira constituency.

Former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ripun Bora has been fielded from the Barchalla constituency.

The polls for the 126-member Assam Assembly are likely to be held in April.

The Congress is seeking to wrest power from the BJP in the northeastern state.
