Bhupen Borah is set to join the BJP on February 22, according to Assam CM
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Tuesday that former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president, Bhupen Kumar Borah, will join the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 22.
The Chief Minister made the announcement after visiting Borah's residence and holding a meeting with him. Following the meeting, Sarma addressed a press conference where he claimed that several Congress workers from Lakhimpur district would also soon switch to the BJP.
Sarma said Borah's induction would strengthen the BJP and added that the party's national president, Nitin Nabin, has approved Borah's joining. He assured that Borah would be given full respect and dignity within the party.
During the same press briefing, the Chief Minister made remarks about senior Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Debabrata Saikia. He said Bordoloi may join the BJP around two months before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He also stated that Debabrata Saikia may join the BJP after facing defeat in the Assembly elections.
The meeting comes a day after Bhupen Kumar Borah submitted his resignation from the Congress party.
