Assam CM condemns "fake passport" issue, alleges foreign interference ahead of polls
During a press conference held in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a strong attack on the Congress, accusing them of engaging in "conspiracies" that, he said, would ultimately fail.
The Chief Minister alleged that a social media group based in Pakistan was involved in attempting to influence the outcome of the Assam elections. He claimed that certain documents circulated online, including a passport, were fabricated and manipulated using artificial intelligence.
The Chief Minister's remarks came amidst an escalating political row involving Congress leader Pawan Khera over allegations related to his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma.
He pointed out several inconsistencies in the document, including mismatched barcodes, the absence of watermarks, identical photographs with altered attire, and incorrect details. He further stated that the image used appeared to be AI-generated.
CM Sarma also alleged that two companies in the United States linked to the controversy were recently created and could be registered easily with minimal documentation and a nominal fee of ₹20,000. He criticized the Congress leadership, stating that such actions were unbecoming and politically motivated.
The Chief Minister confirmed that a case has been filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma and added that both civil and criminal proceedings would be initiated against those involved.
He also took aim at Congress leader Pawan Khera, alleging that misinformation was being spread deliberately. CM Sarma questioned why foreign elements were being invoked in domestic political matters.
The Chief Minister said that the Government of India has already begun gathering information on the matter and that the truth would emerge within 48 hours. He added that legal action has been initiated against Pawan Khera and others.
