Assam Election: BJP Promises Reiteration of Key Issues

Assam Election: BJP Promises Reiteration of Key Issues.webp

Guwahati, March 31 Congress MP Naseer Hussain accused the BJP of politicizing the issue of illegal foreigners in Assam and failing to deport them, even after being in power at both the state and central levels.

He claimed that the saffron party has been repeating the same promises to the people of Assam before every election since 2016, including solving the problem of infiltration, controlling floods, and granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities.

Addressing a press conference here, the Rajya Sabha MP said, "The BJP does not deport foreigners so that it can continue to politicize the issue. It wants foreigners to remain so that it can use the issue during elections and pursue divisive politics."

In recent days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have repeatedly visited Assam and raised the issue of infiltration, attempting to make it a major election issue, he claimed.

"I want to ask: who has been in power at the Centre for the last 12 years and in Assam for the last 10 years? Who is responsible for border security? The BSF functions under Amit Shah. Ensuring border security and preventing infiltration is the responsibility of the central government, not the state," Hussain asserted.

He maintained that the people of the state had brought the BJP to power in 2016, hoping for meaningful change compared to the past 15 years of Congress rule.

"However, the BJP failed to deliver in its first five years. Again in 2021, the BJP formed the government with several promises, but failed to fulfill them," Hussain said.

He questioned the saffron party on its promises of making the state flood-free, granting ST status to six specific communities, updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and creating employment for the youth.

"The BJP is repeating the same promises in 2026 again," Hussain claimed.

Alleging widespread corruption in the state, the MP further said the chief minister "spreads hatred against communities and creates divisions."

"Such controversial remarks by the Chief Minister are discussed not just in Assam but across the country. Sometimes he targets a particular community, sometimes he speaks about eliminating them," Hussain said.

He urged voters to bring the Congress back to power, promising housing, updating the NRC, ST status for the six communities, healthcare schemes, financial support for women, and land rights.

Elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly will be held on April 9, and votes will be counted on May 4.
