Assam Election Campaign: Congress Claims BJP Backed Attack.webp

Guwahati, March 31 A Congress candidate from the Naduar assembly constituency in Assam, Sunil Kumar Chetry, was attacked by unidentified individuals, allegedly backed by the ruling BJP, during the campaign for the upcoming state elections, a party leader said.

The candidate's convoy was attacked on Monday evening in the Napalm bypass of the assembly segment, he said.

Chetry, who is contesting against senior BJP leader Padma Hazarika, fell to the ground and was seen groaning before being taken to a private hospital for treatment.

Assam Pradesh Congress president Gaurav Gogoi alleged that supporters of the ruling party were behind the attack and demanded that those involved be immediately arrested.

He said, "Everyone is equal under the law," and urged the administration to treat members of both the ruling and opposition parties equally.

Gogoi alleged that the attack on a candidate reflects the law and order situation in the state.

Elections to the 126-member Assam assembly will be held on April 9. Votes will be counted on May 4.
