Dibrugarh (Assam), February 18 BJP national president Nitin Nabin set a target for party workers in Assam to secure at least 50 per cent of the votes in every booth in the upcoming assembly elections.
Accusing the Congress of using Assam as a land for "vote bank politics," he said the opposition party is "restless" as the BJP government is "expelling Bangladeshi infiltrators from the country."
Commencing his two-day Assam visit by addressing party workers at a 'Panna Pramukh Sammelan' here, Nabin set a target for the cadre to pocket at least 50 per cent of the votes in every booth in the upcoming assembly elections.
"We are here to achieve a hat-trick victory. But I am not satisfied with just a simple victory. I give you a target – secure 50 per cent of the votes from all booths. This will ensure the Congress party's downfall," he added.
The Assam Assembly elections for 126 constituencies are likely to take place in March-April this year.
Currently, the ruling BJP has 64 members in the Assam Assembly, while its allies AGP has 9 MLAs, UPPL has 7 and BPF has 3 members.
In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF has 15 members and CPI(M) has 1 MLA. There is also an Independent legislator.
Nabin further charged the Congress with compromising national security when it was in power.
"This is a message to all Congress leaders who collaborated with foreign powers and played with national security."
"The Congress indulged in vote bank politics in Assam. They had no policy, intention, or capability to run the state. But the BJP has all three qualities, and we are working with the people," he added.
Nabin claimed that some people are asking why Bangladeshi infiltrators are being expelled from Assam.
"I want to ask them if they have the right to deprive the Assamese people of their rights? Why are they supporting the infiltrators? I thank Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for ensuring the rights of the Assamese people. That is why the entire Congress is restless," he added.
Nabin claimed that the process to expel Bangladeshi infiltrators from Assam is having an impact in West Bengal and Kerala.
"There was a time during the Congress regime when the Pakistani flag used to fly in Kashmir. That situation has changed after the Narendra Modi government came to power," he asserted.
Continuing his attack on the Congress, Nabin claimed that while the BJP is now working to develop the Northeast and Assam, the region was the "land of conflict" during the Congress's tenure, with news only about conflicts.
"We are working to develop Assam, which is the gateway to the Northeast. Today's Assam is known as a land of opportunity, not conflict. The credit goes to the leadership of the BJP," he added.
Nabin recalled his college days in Delhi and said that many students from Assam had gone to the national capital to escape from the conflicts in the state.
"Today, the situation has completely changed due to the BJP government. We are very strict regarding national security, Assam's integrity, and against corruption," he said.
Nabin said that soldiers have been given full freedom to respond to enemies, unlike the Congress government, which remained a spectator even when a soldier was killed.
"This change has come only due to your votes. Everything is changing due to the strong leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Assam is also changing now, and we need to strengthen the state further," he added.
