Guwahati, March 20 Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, filed his nomination as a candidate for the Congress party from the Nazira constituency in the Sivasagar district on Friday.
The Congress is part of a six-party alliance for the upcoming state elections on April 9, which includes Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), CPI(ML), and the All Party Hills Leaders Conference.
Saikia was accompanied by state party president Gaurav Gogoi and other leaders as he submitted his nomination, seeking a fourth consecutive term from Nazira, a constituency that has been a stronghold of his family.
His father and former chief minister, late Hiteswar Saikia, and mother Hemoprava Saikia, had previously represented Nazira in the assembly.
Saikia expressed confidence in winning his seat, as well as the opposition alliance coming to power in the state, ending the 10-year rule of the BJP-led NDA.
The counting of votes for the 126-member Assam Assembly will take place on May 4.
