No Unnatural Activity Noticed on India-Bangladesh Border in Last 10 Days
Guwahati, May 10 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday assured that the India-Bangladesh border in Assam is under heightened surveillance, with no reports of unusual activity over the past ten days.Speaking at a press conference, Sarma stated that patrolling along the border has been intensified as a preventive measure. “We have not seen any activity along the border during the last 10 days, though patrolling has been intensified,” he said.
While asserting the state's vigilance, he noted that the central government possesses additional mechanisms to monitor such situations in greater detail.
Infiltrators Being 'Pushed Back', Not Brought In
Sarma underscored that cross-border infiltration remains a significant concern in the region. However, he said security agencies are actively detaining illegal immigrants at the border itself and are not allowing them into the country."We will not go through the legal process. We will not bring them back but hand them over to the officials of the neighboring country. 'Push back' is the new phenomenon and will not allow any infiltrators to enter the country," he declared.
Rohingya Deportations from Assam Continue
Referring to the deportation of illegal immigrants, Sarma said the central government has already deported individuals, including Rohingya refugees, from various regions, notably from the Matia detention center in Goalpara.“Those who have been identified as foreigners have been sent back. There are only 30-40 people left in the Matia detention center,” he noted.
The Matia detention center, one of India’s largest such facilities, has been under judicial scrutiny. In February, the Supreme Court had directed the Assam government to begin deportation proceedings for 63 foreign nationals lodged there.
