Assembly Approves MSU Amendment Bill; Lunglei HQ Decision Explained.webp

The Mizoram State University (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was passed during the Assembly session today, paving the way for the establishment of the Mizoram State University.

Introducing the Bill, Education Minister Dr Vanlalthlana told the House that after the Mizoram Legislative Assembly passed the Mizoram State University Act, 2025, on March 4, 2025, the government initiated steps to operationalize the university. He said that key positions had been created, and recruitment advertisements had been issued.

The Minister stated that the Geology and Mining Department office in Luangmual, Aizawl, was initially proposed as the headquarters. However, representations from Lunglei, Champhai, and Mamit prompted consultations with NGOs and local MLAs. Following a meeting on November 17, 2025, it was resolved that Lunglei would be the headquarters. This decision was later announced by Chief Minister Lalduhoma on November 20, 2025.

Dr. Vanlalthlana further informed the House that a Bill Drafting Committee was reconstituted to review the Act. With approval from the Council of Ministers, the Amendment Bill was introduced and passed. He added that locating the headquarters in Lunglei would help address regional imbalances in higher education, and that amendments were made to three sections of the Act.
