New Delhi, February 26 Praveen Shankar Kapoor, head of the media department of the Delhi BJP, wrote to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Thursday, demanding an investigation into alleged attempts at land grabbing in the Chandni Chowk area.
Kapoor alleged that during a procession on Wednesday by members of a minority community who were "claiming land" in the Chandi Chowk area, the slogan "The land belongs to the government, and therefore, it is ours" was raised.
He also claimed that the procession by "land grabbers" was taken out on the main Chandni Chowk road under police protection, and he demanded an investigation into the alleged encroachment attempts.
When asked about the alleged attempts, Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood said, "Our priority is 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas' (Everyone together, everyone's development), but anyone who crosses the line of the Constitution will be punished. It is the Rekha Gupta government that takes strong, decisive action."
Residents and traders of Chandni Chowk have repeatedly written to the authorities about the "increase in encroachment" on roads in Old Delhi, such as Deewan Hall Road, Esplanade Road, around Jama Masjid, Khari Baoli, Nai Sadak, and other parts of the walled city, Kapoor said.
The BJP leader, who is also the general secretary of the Chandni Chowk Nagrik Manch (Citizens' Forum of Chandni Chowk), stated that the Delhi High Court has also recently raised concerns about encroachments around Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk.
