The Defence Geo-informatics Research Establishment (DGRE) in Chandigarh has issued an avalanche alert for the higher reaches of the Gangtok and Pakyong districts, with a potential risk over the next 24 hours.
According to the advisory, there is a medium-level avalanche threat in areas above 3,500 meters, where current snow conditions are unstable. Authorities have cautioned that steep, snow-covered slopes are particularly vulnerable.
Residents, tourists, and trekkers are strongly advised to avoid high-altitude travel unless absolutely necessary and to remain vigilant while moving through these areas.
The alert comes in the wake of prevailing weather patterns that may weaken snow layers, increasing the likelihood of avalanches. Officials are closely monitoring the situation and have urged the public to stay informed through official channels and to comply with all safety advisories.
