Bahraich (UP), April 5 A police team attempting to arrest a notorious criminal was attacked allegedly by his family members and associates here, officials said on Sunday.

Five police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were injured in the attack.

Police sources said that a team, led by Sub-Inspector Vishesh Singh of Kotwali Nagar, had visited the home of Barkatullah alias 'Docomo' in Qila Mahajani locality on Saturday night to arrest him. He has seven cases registered against him related to rioting, trespassing, and sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The team surrounded Barkatullah and apprehended him on the spot; however, he immediately raised an alarm, calling his family members and associates.

According to the police, upon hearing his voice, his father Rafiqullah, brother Abdullah, mother Rabia, sisters, along with his associates Nazir Ahmed, and several others arrived at the scene.

Opposing Barkatullah's arrest, they clashed with the police team. The attackers assaulted the police squad using bricks and stones, engaged in shoving and violence, bit the officers, and hurled verbal abuses and death threats, resulting in injuries to five police personnel, including the sub-inspector.

According to the police, the attackers snatched Barkatullah and helped him escape.

All injured police personnel received medical treatment at the District Hospital.

Based on a written complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Vishesh Singh, who was among the injured in the attack, a case was registered on Sunday at Kotwali Nagar police station against Barkatullah's family members and his associates under sections including rioting, causing hurt to a public servant, endangering life, etc., under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police arrested Barkatullah alias Docomo and Nazir Ahmed on Sunday. Further investigation is underway.
