
Balrampur (UP), April 5 An elderly man was fatally beaten and two others, including a woman, were injured following a minor dispute here, police said on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Friday in Pipra Yakub village under the Shridattganj police station area, when a young man, Zuber, went to return an irrigation pipe to his neighbor after watering his field.
An argument broke out over the length of the pipe and soon escalated. Some young men who were playing cricket nearby reached the spot and allegedly started assaulting Zuber, Circle Officer Raghvendra Pratap Singh said.
Hearing the commotion, Zuber's father, a 71-year-old man named Nizamuddin, rushed to intervene but was attacked with sticks and a cricket bat.
He sustained serious injuries and died on the spot, police said.
Zuber's sister and another person who tried to rescue him were also injured in the attack and have been admitted to the hospital.
Two suspects have been detained for questioning, Singh said, adding that the body has been sent for post-mortem and further action will be taken based on the report.
An additional police force has been deployed in the village to maintain law and order in view of the prevailing tension, he added.
