Bangladesh Cuts Office Hours to Address Energy Crisis

Bangladesh Cuts Office Hours to Address Energy Crisis.webp

April 03, New Delhi: Bangladesh has introduced new measures to reduce energy consumption in the face of rising power supply challenges, triggered by the conflict in West Asia that is disrupting global fuel markets.

Under the new rules, government offices will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., while markets and shopping centers must close by 6 p.m. to reduce electricity usage. The government has also instructed cuts in non-essential public expenditure and urged industries to limit power consumption, including restrictions on excessive lighting.

The Ministry of Education will issue guidelines for schools starting Sunday, considering measures such as adjusted timetables and partial shifts to online classes. Additionally, the government is seeking external financing of over $2.5 billion to fund fuel and liquefied natural gas imports, as rising energy costs further strain foreign exchange reserves.
