Srinagar, April 2 – Police in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir said on Thursday that it had seized a vehicle purchased with the proceeds of drug trafficking during its ongoing anti-drug operation.
A police statement released on Thursday stated, "The Baramulla Police seized a vehicle linked to a drug trafficking case as part of its ongoing action against narcotic-related offenses in the district."
The vehicle, a Maruti Alto-800 with registration number JK05K-7701, was seized in connection with cases registered at the Kunzer Police Station under the provisions of the NDPS Act and the Excise Act.
According to officials, the action was taken during the course of investigation into cases registered under FIR No. 55/2014 under Sections 8/15 of the NDPS Act and FIR No. 74/2024 under Sections 8/18-29 of the NDPS Act.
This development is part of a broader effort by law enforcement agencies to target not only drug trafficking activities, but also assets allegedly acquired through illegal means, in an attempt to disrupt the financial networks behind the narcotics trade.
Police said that the investigation revealed that the vehicle had been purchased using proceeds from the illicit sale of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Officials added that the vehicle was registered in the name of a family member to conceal ownership.
The accused, identified as Abdul Ahad Magray, a resident of Sharai in Baramulla, has been named in the cases and is accused of repeated instances of drug peddling.
Authorities said that the seizure was carried out under legal provisions aimed at depriving accused persons of assets linked to unlawful activities.
The Baramulla Police said that such measures are intended to curb the spread of drug abuse and dismantle networks operating in the region. Further investigation in the cases is underway.
The J&K Police and security forces have been carrying out operations against drug smugglers, drug peddlers, and those involved in hawala money rackets.
It is believed that funds generated by these unlawful activities are ultimately used to sustain terrorism in J&K.
