
Kolkata, February 22 A woman was allegedly sexually assaulted after being forced into a car in the Behala area of Kolkata, police said on Sunday.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim's father, the accused, Arnab Sau, was arrested on Sunday for outraging the woman's modesty and physically assaulting her, a senior police official said.
The official said the accused allegedly forced the woman to get into the car near Behala Chowrasta, sexually assaulted her during the trip, and then pushed her after slowing down the vehicle later.
The car was later found parked at a nearby location on Diamond Harbour Road.
Based on the complaint, CCTV footage from the area and eyewitness accounts, Sau was picked up and arrested on charges of wrongful confinement, outraging the modesty of a woman, and physical assault.
The woman's father said she was walking alone on the street on Saturday evening when Sau stopped the vehicle as it passed by and forced her to get inside the vehicle.
The official said that the police were investigating whether Sau knew the victim and were trying to piece together the sequence of events.
The incident highlights the issue of women's safety in the city, which was recently prioritized by Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar after taking over.
