Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque Dispute: Court Sets Date for Review

Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque Dispute: Court Sets Date for Review.webp

Indore, April 2 – The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court announced on Thursday that it will regularly hear the Bhojshala Temple-Kamal Maula Mosque dispute from April 6 onwards.

The hearing was originally scheduled for Thursday (April 2), but was postponed. The bench comprising Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla and Justice Alok Awasthi fixed the matter for hearing on April 6, 2026, at 2:30 pm.

Significantly, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had earlier stated that it would inspect the disputed complex in Dhar, given the multiple disputes, and had fixed April 2 for further hearing.

A significant development occurred a day after the Supreme Court (on April 1) stated that the Madhya Pradesh High Court would consider objections raised by the Muslim side regarding the ongoing survey of the Bhojshala Temple–Kamal Maula Mosque complex, while emphasizing adherence to principles of natural justice.

The Supreme Court observed that certain objections raised by the parties stemmed from aspects captured during videography conducted at the site, and clarified that such objections must also be duly considered by the High Court in accordance with principles of natural justice.

The dispute centers around Bhojshala, a 11th-century monument located in Dhar and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The site holds religious significance for both Hindus and Muslims.

Hindus believe that the structure is a temple dedicated to Goddess Vagdevi (Saraswati), while Muslims regard it as the Kamal Maula Mosque.

To manage competing claims, an arrangement by the ASI in 2003 allowed Hindus to perform pooja on Tuesdays and Muslims to offer Namaz on Fridays.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, on February 23, had directed all parties to submit their objections and opinions regarding the scientific survey conducted by the ASI.

On March 16, two judges hearing the matter decided to visit the disputed site.
