
Bidar (Karnataka), March 24 A 21-year-old medical student was found dead in his hostel room at the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences here, police said on Tuesday.
Anishkar Chouhan is from Kalaburagi, they said.
He allegedly died by suicide on Monday after being overwhelmed by financial pressures after he had lost Rs 80,000 in online gaming, police said.
Pradeep Gunti, Superintendent of Police (Bidar), said that forensic experts and crime scene officers conducted an inspection, after which doctors from BRIMS confirmed the death as suicide.
Regarding the suspected reason for the suicide, the officer said that examination of his WhatsApp messages suggested that he had been playing some online games and investing money in them.
"He reportedly borrowed around Rs 70,000 from friends and also used his own funds, losing approximately Rs 80,000 in online gaming. A message indicates that he died by suicide last (Monday) night, allegedly due to the distress arising from these losses," he said.
The officer said that deleted data from Chouhan's phone is being retrieved to examine and ascertain facts. Further investigation is underway.
