Guwahati, April 4 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that the state government will provide one free LPG cylinder to each person during the Bihu and Durga Puja festivals.
Addressing an election rally in the Mahmora constituency in the Charaideo district, Sarma clarified that the free gas cylinders will be distributed to all the people of Assam or to a specific group.
"Moving forward, we will provide two free cylinders during Bihu and Durga Puja to the people, so that they can celebrate joyfully," he said.
One free LPG cylinder will be provided during the Bihu and Durga Puja festivals, he stated.
The Rongali Bihu festival will be celebrated from April 14, while Durga Puja festivities will begin in October.
In March, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota had said that local refineries have the capacity to meet only about 30 per cent of the state's LPG demand, indicating a possible shortage of cooking fuel in the coming days due to the conflict in the Middle East.
Polling for the 126-member Assam assembly will be held on April 9, while the results will be announced on May 4.
