
March 29, New Delhi: India and Malta held the 4th Round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Valletta on March 27, 2026. The consultations were co-chaired by Sibi George, Secretary (West), and Christopher Cutajar, Permanent Secretary in Malta's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the visit, the Secretary (West) met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ian Borg. Both sides discussed ways to strengthen ongoing cooperation and expand bilateral engagement. He also met with Brigadier Clinton J O'Neill, Commander of the Armed Forces of Malta, and discussed enhancing defence and security cooperation.
The consultations reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and noted steady progress, including the milestone of 60 years of diplomatic ties in 2026. Both sides welcomed increased high-level engagements and discussed cooperation in trade and investment, tourism, technology and innovation, the maritime sector, as well as education and culture.
They also explored ways to deepen economic and commercial ties, particularly in light of the recently concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement. Cooperation in ICT, healthcare, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, and education was identified for further advancement.
Both sides exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest and agreed to continue cooperation in multilateral forums.
During the visit, the Secretary (West) also interacted with business leaders in Malta to further strengthen trade, investment, and business ties between the two countries.
