Bill Seeks to Return Trump-Era Tariffs to Businesses.webp

February 24, New Delhi – A group of 22 U.S. Senate Democrats introduced legislation on Monday that would require the Trump administration to fully refund, within 180 days, all revenue collected from tariffs that were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, along with interest.

The 22 Democrats include Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Ron Wyden, Edward Markey, and Jeanne Shaheen, who are the leading Democrats on key Senate committees.

The legislation would require the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, which collects tariffs at U.S. ports of entry, to prioritize small businesses.

Under the proposed bill, Customs and Border Protection would be required to refund all tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act that were unlawfully levied by U.S. President Donald Trump, including interest, even if the import duties had already been finalized or "liquidated" by CBP.
