New Delhi, March 31 Banaras Locomotive Works achieved a record-breaking production of 572 locomotives in the 2025–26 fiscal year, adding a new golden chapter to the industrial history of Indian Railways, the Railway Ministry said on Tuesday.
"This milestone strongly demonstrates Banaras Locomotive Works' (BLW) technical excellence, efficient management, and the relentless efforts of its officers and employees," it added.
In the previous financial year (2024–25), the company produced 477 locomotives, and this year's production represents a 20 per cent increase.
"This achievement is a matter of pride not only for BLW but for the entire Indian Railways family," the ministry said.
A breakdown of the 572 locomotives produced by the company shows that 558 are modern electric locomotives for Indian Railways, including 401 WAG-9 and 143 WAP-7 category.
In addition, the company produced 14 Amrit Bharat locomotives, 10 diesel locomotives for export to Mozambique, and 4 diesel locomotives for non-railway customers.
"Notably, against a target of 553 electric locomotives for FY 2025–26, BLW successfully produced 558 units, exceeding the target by approximately 1 per cent and 18 per cent more than the previous year," the ministry said.
It added, "Since its inception, BLW has manufactured a total of 11,259 locomotives, including 2,925 electric locomotives. This reflects BLW's significant contribution to the self-reliance and technological advancement of Indian Railways."
Officials said that the Railway Ministry has set an ambitious target of 642 electric locomotives for BLW for the financial year 2026–27.
General Manager of BLW, Ashutosh Pant, congratulated all officers, employees, women staff, and their families.
Pant stated that this success is the result of the team's hard work, technical expertise, and strong commitment to achieving targets set by the Railway Board. He expressed confidence that BLW will set new benchmarks in the coming financial year as well.
