President Mohammad Shahabuddin has convened the first session of the 13th Parliament for March 12th, almost a month after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) formed the government following their victory. According to a statement from the Jatiya Sangsad, the President convened the session under Article 72(1) of the Constitution. The inaugural session will begin at 11 AM, with the BNP holding a two-thirds majority and Jamaat-e-Islami serving as the main opposition.
BNP spokesperson and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had earlier stated that the session would elect a new Speaker. However, it remains unclear who will preside over the inaugural session, as tradition dictates that the previous Speaker or Deputy Speaker oversee proceedings until a new Speaker is chosen.
