Pradyut Bordoloi joins the BJP ahead of the Assembly elections
Senior leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined the BJP in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP president Dilip Saikia, and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita in New Delhi. This move comes ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
Bordoloi, who has been an MP from the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency for two terms, informed All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge of his decision in a letter on Tuesday. In the letter, he stated that he has stepped down from all party responsibilities.
While the letter did not specify the reasons, Bordoloi later said that repeated humiliation over certain issues prompted his decision to resign.
Speaking to the media earlier, Bordoloi said he would soon issue a detailed press release regarding his resignation. He emphasized that peace and development of Assam remain his top priorities and clarified that his decision to quit was not driven by ticket considerations.
He also criticised party leader Imran Masood, alleging a communal approach. Bordoloi said that his decision to resign mid-term, ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, was the result of a long-standing issue.
This development comes days after senior leader Bhupen Kumar Borah resigned from the Congress and joined the BJP, dealing another blow to the party in the state.
