On the eve of the South Africa versus UAE match in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Proteas consultant coach Albie Morkel dismissed concerns about Dewald Brevis’s form, despite his scores of 6, 23, and 31. Morkel described Brevis as a key player who “can both frustrate and inspire you.”

He also said, “The best approach is to let him play his own game.” During Wednesday’s practice session, Brevis scored 36 off 25 balls, his highest score in this World Cup, and impressed the 14,400 fans present.

After South Africa won their Group D match by six wickets, Brevis addressed concerns about his low scores. “Not at all. I feel confident and enjoy playing,” he said.

He also highlighted a 87-meter pull shot over midwicket, which impressed the crowd despite the short balls often causing his difficulties. "I really enjoyed that shot. I love playing short balls."

South Africa's Super Eights opponents are already confirmed. They will face defending champions India in Ahmedabad on Sunday, a match expected to draw a large crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium. While South Africa's bowlers have adjusted to the conditions, thanks to their three Group D matches, India remains the favorite.

"It's a great opportunity. We're all in a good place. We're growing as a team, and it's exciting to see our progress. I enjoy every moment of playing, and everyone is performing well. It's a challenging wicket, but it's also a lot of fun. I'm glad I can contribute to the team," he said.

Asked about South Africa’s strategy against India, Brevis had a simple answer. “We will continue to play like we have been.”

The challenge of facing Varun Chakravarthy looms large, and Brevis didn’t reveal his game plan. “He’s a spin bowler, so I’ll watch the ball and react accordingly.”

Brevis made his T20I debut in Durban in August 2023, but took time to establish himself as a key player for the Proteas. “Definitely, I’ve grown as a player. It’s been a great journey, and I’m enjoying it.

“I know how it feels to have ups and downs, but that’s part of the process. It helps you understand yourself as a player and as a person. I’ve really enjoyed every moment,” he said.

He was often compared to AB de Villiers, but never felt pressured. “No, it’s always been an honor to be compared to AB. I’ve never felt any pressure. It’s been a privilege. I really enjoy being here.”

Brevis also admitted that the pitches in the IPL, where he plays for Chennai Super Kings, are better than those offered for this World Cup. “Like in the IPL, the pitches are flatter and better. But the pitches and everything are still great. It’s wonderful to be here with the fans. They create an amazing atmosphere. I love playing here.”

On being reminded that South Africa lost the T20I series 4-1 to India last year, and whether it would affect their performance, Brevis dismissed it. “It’s just preparation for the World Cup. We need to focus on the present and the future.”

“It’s going to be a fresh start for both teams. We need to be the best we can be and enjoy the moment,” he concluded.
