New Delhi, March 12 The Delhi Assembly's budget session is likely to begin on March 23. The proposal to hold the session will be approved in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, officials said on Thursday.
According to the officials, the Delhi Economic Survey will be presented on the first day of the budget session. The following day, the annual budget for the financial year 2026-27 will be presented in the House.
In 2025, Chief Minister Gupta presented her maiden budget in the assembly, worth Rs one lakh crore. This year, the total budget allocation is expected to be slightly more than that in the previous financial year, said a senior government official.
The second budget of the BJP government in Delhi is likely to focus on infrastructure, green initiatives, and education, officials said.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has cautioned departments against submitting last-minute expenditure proposals before the end of the current financial year 2025-26.
The finance department has issued a memo reminding departments that, according to Rule 62(3) of the GFR, 2017, a rush of expenditure, especially in the final month of the financial year, will be considered a breach of financial propriety and should be avoided.
All expenditure proposals requiring the approval of the finance department for the current financial year must be submitted by March 23, 2026, the memo said, adding that proposals received after this deadline will only be considered in the next financial year.
The memo emphasised that last-minute proposals leave insufficient time for examination and do not allow departments adequate time to ensure proper utilisation of funds.
