
A two-day workshop on disaster preparedness under the University Safety Programme was inaugurated at the Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora.
March 11, Srinagar: A two-day Training and Capacity Building Workshop under the University Safety Programme titled "Building a Disaster Resilient J&K" was inaugurated at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) campus in Awantipora.
The workshop, organized by IUST in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, aims to strengthen disaster preparedness and enhance institutional capacity to effectively respond to emergencies and natural disasters.
Vice Chancellor of IUST, Shakil A. Romshoo, attended the programme as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the workshop.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness and resilience, particularly in a region like Jammu and Kashmir, which is vulnerable to multiple natural hazards. He emphasised that universities must play a proactive role in spreading awareness and equipping students and staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively manage disasters.
The workshop is being facilitated by Dr. Jitinder Pal Bali, a national-level trainer with the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS).
Others present at the event included Dr Shalinder Kour, Dr Ruheela Hassan, Dean Outreach at IUST, along with faculty members, students, and officials associated with the programme.
During the two-day workshop, participants will be trained in various aspects of disaster management, including risk assessment, emergency response mechanisms, safety protocols, disaster preparedness strategies, and community resilience. Interactive sessions and practical demonstrations are also being conducted to enhance participants' understanding of disaster response and safety measures.
The initiative aims to promote awareness and foster a disaster-resilient culture within educational institutions and the wider community in Jammu and Kashmir.
