By-Election Preparations Complete in Dharmanagar.webp

Agartala, April 7 Campaigning for the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election in Tripura concluded peacefully on Tuesday, with no incidents reported, an official said.

The April 9 by-election is set to witness a multi-party contest, with the BJP, Left Front, and Congress fielding candidates separately.

The by-election was necessitated following the death of Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen of the BJP in December last year.

The campaign saw visits by Chief Minister Manik Saha, who addressed rallies twice in the constituency.

Senior leaders, including former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Congress General Secretary Saptagiri Ulaka, also campaigned for their respective parties.

PCC President Asish Kumar Saha, CLP Leader Birajit Sinha, and MLA Sudip Roy Barman were among those who canvassed for candidates.

"The campaign ended peacefully at 4 pm on Tuesday with no incidents reported. All preparations for the by-election have been completed, and polling personnel will leave for their booths on Wednesday," Returning Officer Debjani Choudhury told reporters.

She said the constituency has 55 polling booths, of which 11 have been identified as model booths and another 11 as women-managed booths.

"An elaborate security arrangement has been made to ensure free, fair, and violence-free voting on April 9. In view of a possible cyclone between April 8 and 10, adequate shelters have been set up at all booths," she added.

A total of 46,142 voters will decide the fate of six candidates in the by-election. Women voters number 23,758, outnumbering male voters at 22,348.
