Canadian Police Investigate Targeted Stabbing Tied to Anti-Khalistan Views.webp

Ottawa, March 6 A social media account promoting extremist views of Sikhs has claimed responsibility for the death of an Indian-origin woman in Ontario, Canada, according to a media report.

Nancy Grewal, 45, from Windsor, was killed just before 9:30 pm on March 3 in the area of Todd Lane in LaSalle, Essex County, according to the LaSalle Police Service on Wednesday.

On social media, an account, written in Punjabi, claims that Nancy Grewal of Windsor was killed for her criticism of the Khalistani movement, CBC News reported late Thursday night.

CBC News stated that CBC has not independently verified the account or the information. The CBC report quoted a caption accompanying a picture of Grewal that said, "This woman was saying bad things about religion and Khalistan. And she got the result of that."

"We have no ill will towards any community or religion, and if anyone says something against our community and Khalistan, they will face the same consequences," the CBC report quoted the same caption.

In a statement, the LaSalle Police said investigators are considering all information but cannot comment further to protect the investigation.

However, the police did say they believe the stabbing was targeted at Grewal and was not random, CBC said.

Grewal, born in India, had a prominent social media presence in the local and international Punjabi communities. She often posted on social media platforms with her thoughts on South Asian news and politics, CBC said, adding that she was known particularly for her anti-Khalistan views.

In Chandigarh on Thursday, Grewal's mother, Shinderpal Kaur, claimed that her daughter had received threats to her life and accused some hardliners in Windsor of having animosity towards the deceased.
