A two-day Human Resource Development programme on Integrated Pest Management was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Centre of Excellence, Zawoora, Srinagar.

February 19, Srinagar: A two-day Human Resource Development programme on Integrated Pest Management began on Wednesday at the Centre of Excellence, Zawoora, Srinagar.

The Central Integrated Pest Management Centre organized the programme in collaboration with the State Horticulture Department.

Abdul Hamid Bhat, joint director of horticulture, Kashmir, attended as the chief guest. He was accompanied by Iqbal Ahmed Wafai, farm manager, ACHD Rajbagh.

In his address, Bhat emphasized the importance of capacity building for field functionaries and farmers to promote sustainable horticultural practices. He stressed the need for eco-friendly pest management strategies to ensure safe food production and environmental protection.

Dr. Mithilesh Kumar Arya, deputy director (plant protection), delivered a detailed presentation on Integrated Pest Management and the safe and judicious use of pesticides. He outlined key IPM principles, including need-based pesticide application, biological control measures, and resistance management to reduce environmental and health risks.

Dr. Haroon Rashid Hakla, assistant plant protection officer, conducted a technical session on the National Pest Surveillance System, highlighting its role in real-time pest monitoring, early warning, and informed decision-making to prevent crop losses.

Field officials and farmers participated in the programme, which aims to strengthen pest surveillance, encourage responsible pesticide use, and enhance sustainable horticultural productivity in the region.
