New Delhi, February 18 Artificial Intelligence can improve the quality and reliability of power supply in the country by optimizing resources, but there is a need to accelerate adoption, Central Electricity Authority Chairman Ghanshyam Prasad said on Wednesday.
He was speaking at a session of the AI Impact Summit here.
"The power sector is opening up and there are huge opportunities. Innovative solutions like these are waiting to be used, and I think we need to catch up and speed up so that we don't fall behind," he added.
Prasad said that a number of things need to be optimized in the power sector using AI, including in planning – resource adequacy, transmission, distribution network distribution, and power purchase.
He said that a significant overhaul is required in resource adequacy planning, which began about three to four years ago. "We have reached a certain level, but a huge amount of other improvements are needed."
Regarding grid operation, he said that India is still not doing it the right way, and "we need significant optimization that can save costs and also reduce restoration time."
He pointed out that there are problems in rural areas regarding the reliability and quality of power supply, which need to be addressed.
He also called for the use of AI in the entire tariff determination process to avoid delays and address other issues.
Prasad stated that AI can be used in capacity building in the power sector. "But I still feel that a huge amount of work needs to be done in these areas as well," he opined.
