Idukki (Kerala), March 12 Power Minister K Krishnankutty on Thursday said the Idukki Hydroelectric Project was a dream realized that rescued Kerala from darkness.
He inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project and released the Golden Jubilee Souvenir at a function held at the Moolamattom IHEP school ground.
The Idukki project was one of the most remarkable projects in Kerala's history, and the result of the hard work, determination, and sacrifice of several officials and workers, he said.
The contributions of Kolumban Mooppan, who laid the foundation for the project's realization, should always be remembered, and that the younger generation should be made aware of his role.
Krishnankutty said the state had carried out unprecedented work in the power sector over the past few years.
"In the past 10 years, Kerala has produced 2,394 MW of electricity. Our aim is to generate 10,000 MW, and several projects are being implemented to achieve this," he said.
The minister also said the government was focusing on installing solar power plants and strengthening backup power systems using solar energy.
KSEB Limited chairman and managing director Minhaj Alam presided over the function, and KSEB generation chief engineer Viju Rajan John presented the report.
The minister also honoured workers and officials who were part of the construction of the Idukki project.
As part of the golden jubilee celebrations, technical seminars, exhibitions, and various cultural programmes were also organized.
The Idukki Hydroelectric Project, one of the largest power generation projects in the state, was commissioned in 1976.
The project comprises three dams, including the Idukki Arch Dam, and a power house located at Moolamattom.
